The first comprehensive road infrastructure safety assessment conducted in the Republic of Bulgaria complies with the requirements of Directive (EU) 2008\/96 on road infrastructure safety management and the Ordinance on Road Infrastructure Safety Management. The purpose of the procedure is to classify roads in terms of the potential risk to road users arising from the condition of road elements, while also taking into account data on occurred road traffic accidents (RTAs), and subsequently to define recommendations for targeted inspections and direct corrective actions. The scope covers all classes of national roads \u2014 motorways, first-class, second-class, and third-class roads \u2014 with a total length outside populated areas of approximately 6,900 km.<\/p>\n

The results of the first comprehensive road network safety assessment in Bulgaria are presented in a report prepared on the basis of data collected by the end of the reference year 2023. The report examines the main problems and opportunities for improvement, with a view to sustainable development in line with good European and global practices. Each Member State of the European Union is required to carry out the procedure at least once every five years.<\/p>\n
